OUR HISTORY
We received our very
first grant: $3,000
from the Chinook Fund
– a cause for much joy
and celebration.
2006
Hassan Latif was
released from prison
and vowed he was
never going back!
2011
2013
After 18 years of
incarceration Hassan
knew that changes
needed to be made in
the criminal legal system. He joined
the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform
Coalition.
SCC moved into a tiny office courtesy
of our friends at It Takes a Village.
SCC moved into a new home in Aurora,
lovingly renovated by current and
former client-partners.
After witnessing the cycle of recidivism
from inside prison and as a re-entry
specialist, Hassan wanted to try a
different approach!
2014
The groundbreaking
Never Going Back:
7 Steps to Staying
Out of Prison
was published
and continues to
form the core of
SCC’s approach
to addressing the
needs of people leaving prison.

We began working with the Latino
Coalition for Community Leadership.
Khalil Halim joined
the fledgling SCC
as a founding
board member.
SCC was an inaugural grantee of
HB14-1355’s WAGEES – Work and Gain
Education and Employment Skills.
Additional formerly incarcerated
staff joined the team and SCC began
working closely with CDOC to support
returning citizens.
Hassan was joined by dear friends
Adam Abdullah and Sean Ahshee
Taylor, making an initial three-person
staff with a combined experience of
more than 70 years of incarceration.
2012
Second Chance
Center was
incorporated
as a nonprofit
and launched
as a “mobile
unit” from the
back seat of
Hassan’s car.
2015
CCJRC and SCC secured passage of
HB 14-1355. This historic measure
mandated that part of the Colorado
Department of Corrections (CDOC)
budget be redirected to promote
community safety.
CCJRC BOARD
